• WASHINGTON, DC -- 9/23/20 -- Bohannon Smith, 44, of Montgomery Village, MD: “Judges have a special place in our heart. Presidents come and go, but Ruth Bader Ginsburg was on the Supreme Court for four presidents. It’s a big contrast in importance. Judges are judges, they’re all of our judges. It doesn’t matter their religious belief, it doesn’t matter what college they graduated from, once they get on the bench, once a Supreme Court Justice becomes a Supreme Court Justice, they belong to all of us. So whatever they choose to judge, I’ll live with it.”
• WASHINGTON, DC -- 9/23/20 -- Terrence Kane, 22, of Bucks County, PA:”I think most immediately it’s just the integrity of the Supreme Court. At least since the 80’s and 90’s it’s gotten increasingly politicized. I just have a feeling that with everything that’s going to happen between now and Inauguration Day of next year that one half of the country that one half of the country will lose all its faith in the Supreme Court. I just don’t know which half it is. I’m nervous to see the implications of all that.”
I am heartbroken and angry and scared to death for our country and I think that our democracy is really at risk. I do fear for the future of our country. • WASHINGTON, DC -- 9/23/20 -- Jennifer Flynn, 45, of Alexandria, VA, and her daughter, Zoë Flynn, 13.
Jennifer Flynn: “Primarily issues around civil rights, but also other issues such as gerrymandering. At this point, if she’s replaced prior to the election the court will be so stacked I feel like it won’t be recovered in my daughter’s generation, which is very scary. The scales are being tipped in such a way that our basic rights are being threatened.”

Zoë Flynn: “I’m really worried that my generation and my family and the women that I grew up with will lose the rights to their bodies and making their own choice of whether or not they want to have a child. And for my transgender and gay friends that I know and whether or not they’re going to keep their rights.”
• WASHINGTON, DC -- 9/23/20 -- Justin Chandler, 32, of Ithaca, NY: ”As an LGBTQ individual I”m most concerned about that. Of course all of the human rights issues she dealt with, same sex rights, abortion rights, all of those are still important to me. Specifically the same sex marriage. I’m from Mississippi originally and that was sort of taboo to talk about down there. I know while some won’t probably won’t admit it, that is something that they’re thinking about right now, ‘How can we get a new justice on the court to overturn that.’ All of the really conservative issues that have been brought over the years, those are really concerning to me right now, that we may overturn those and overturn her legacy.”
• WASHINGTON, DC -- 9/23/20 -- Aaron Aranza, 21, Alexandria, VA:”The Affordable Care Act because that is something that the conservatives have had their guns out for a long time. Honestly, maybe it’s the pessimist in me talking but anything is possible. Anything is able to be taken back. There’s a pattern in history where after the greatest periods of progress come the deepest periods of retrenchment and while some may say, ‘oh the court is just going to be conservative for a few decades, that’s fine’, you see what they did back in 2013 to the Voting Rights Act. An essential piece of Civil Rights legislation that they just ripped the heart out of. I’m afraid that can happen to healthcare, abortion, gay marriage, which is personal to me. The possibilities seem endless and not in a good way.”
Aranza, 59, of Washington DC:”I feel indebted to this giant, who without an audience, without precedence and without any support just boldly stepped forward to do things that were unimaginable. Like allowing women like myself to purchase a home without the permission of a man, allowing the marriage of two people no matter who they love, defending the right of a human being to govern her own body, because there is no law that governs the body of a man. Why should there be a law that governs the body of a woman? It is my body.”
It’s unfortunate that so much hinges on the timing of her passing. Whoever replaces her will be making decisions for most of their (her sons’) lives. Immigration reform and how it’s being approached — I think it’s terrible as far as disrupting the families, all the equality issues that have been fought so hard for and now are in limbo.”
Cara Gilbert, 40, of Washington DC: “I’m here today to pay respects to Ruth Bader Ginsburg because she was a fierce advocate for women’s rights; she was a fierce advocate for all citizens regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and she was someone who paved the way for working women in an era when men generally dominated. There are many issues but overall equality and reproductive rights [are most concerned with].”
• WASHINGTON, DC -- 9/23/20 -- Lara Gambony, 52, of Grayslake, IL: “I’m concerned with reproductive rights and I’m also concerned with equal right for all — women, LGBTQ, people of color. I’m concerned that our rights are just gonna get eroded away continually. My fear is that they’re going to use religion as the basis for their reasonings which could put us back into the Dark Ages. Women shouldn’t have to go back to coat hangers. We’re autonomous beings, we don’t need to be taken care of. It’s between us and our doctors.”
• WASHINGTON, DC -- 9/23/20 -- Chivonn Anderson, 40, of Philadelphia: “We won’t have that voice that stands up for all the people that are on the fringes of society in America. She did so much for so many and in this time that we’re in right now we need her and her voice more than ever. It’s scary to see who’s gonna take her place. She has a legacy that needs to be fulfilled and I hope that whoever is nominated and gets that position will honor her legacy by thinking about everybody in the country, not the people that just appointed them and stuck them in that position.”
